Kate's doctor was a bit surprised today. He said her vital signs have been stable and stayed about the same as they were yesterday-but her x-ray looked very hazy. Fluid in her lungs cause them to look this way. He said these two things usually don't go hand in hand-usually the baby has a hard time breathing when they have fluid in their lungs. He is worried that her PDA has reopened because of the signs she is showing: fluid retention, hazy lungs, and a heart murmur can be heard again. Because she has already had two treatments of medicine the only option left is surgery. The doctor said that there is going to be a fine balance between taking her into surgery verses letting her continue to grow. As long as she is able to do so well with her breathing they will hold off, but they will have to watch her closely. Another echo will be done on Friday to see if it truly is her PDA that has opened.
Kate was given a medicine called Lasix. It is a diuretic that will help her get rid of the fluid she's retained. When I saw her tonight she looked a lot better than Tuesday- not quite so swollen. She was also very calm. She's up to 3.2 ml of milk for her feedings and doing well with it. She's still feisty- she pulled out her ventilator tubes and they had to re-intubate her.
